The BuilderIn 1974 Quentin Moeder was a summer regular on a framing crew. After graduating from Wichita West High School in 1976, he became a full time framer and within a year started his own company. Moeder Construction soon became the largest framing company in Greater Wichita, with about 50 employees, and had all the residential and commercial work it could handle. Quentin began building homes and taking on remodeling projects for friends and acquaintances about 1987, while still framing and installing siding for other builders at the same time. "About 1990, I started concentrating on just building," he says. "With good quality control, we found we were able to build a very competitive house that came standard with a few bells and whistles." Over the next decade, Moeder Construction grew into one of Greater Wichita's busiest homebuilders. The company now builds about 250 homes a year in the low $100,000 to $300,000+ price range. "We build from Valley Center to Derby, from Andover to west Wichita," Quentin says. "We're always busy because we build a house that buyers can personalize to fit their needs and tastes, yet still affordable." "There are cookie-cutter builders in our price range, but I consider myself to be a custom builder, because we hardly ever build anything that's just like the model. We build our models in such a way that they can be changed to fit the buyer's wants and needs without a lot of extra expense." Quentin says his homes are in demand because he can distinguish them with extras and still remain competitive in the price range. A Moeder-built home might include a double-sided fireplace that separates areas; vaulted ceilings and crown molding in the kitchen, dining area, living room and master suite; a built-in breakfast nook; stand-alone cabinetry; a view-out basement; skylights; a soaker tub and separate shower. All homes include a rough-out for a central vacuum system. Most are built on lots that are larger than typical for the price range. His many employees, subcontractors and suppliers share Quentin's commitment to quality and affordability. "Otherwise," he says, "they wouldn't be working for us." Sonya Moeder is as committed to the homebuilding industry as her husband is. Sonya is the office manager and attends to much of the company's business. Shane, Quentin and Sonya's son, also works in the business. "My wife works a lot of hours," Quentin says. "Without her, I'd be in big trouble. We're good together, because she doesn't mind the inside work, whereas I've always loved to work outdoors." Quentin Moeder never strays far from the homebuilding industry. "There's nothing I'd rather be doing than this," he says. "I hope I'm still doing this 20 years from now - I don't plan on stopping. I still like to get my hands dirty.
